Dreaming of the Outdoors

Spring finally arrived, the grass is growing again, and the flowers splash color under the Old Walnut Tree.  As warm weather creeps closer, our little cottage by the creek feels slightly more cramped.  Brett, John, Hank, Harper, Snow White, and I need to expand.  We need to step outside, fire up the grill, and enjoy the ambiance our creek provides.

In my head, I have been designing the perfect outdoor remodel.  Perhaps it’s a wishlist or a vision board or a brainstorm.  Regardless, I’d appreciate your input… what do you think of these ideas?
Outdoor Kitchen
Brett is a wizard on the grill.  His steaks are divine and his brisket is world-class.

We would love to create an area outside for his magic to unfold.  Something simple should suffice: built-in BBQ, mini-fridge, and a sink.
The kitchen should be covered for rainy days or the hot sun.  A dining table under the cover for entertaining will complete the perfect space for outdoor entertaining.  Grab a cold beer and a rib eye and meet us by the creek!
Patio
While Brett grills dinner, I will be toasting s ’mores by the fire.  There are so many beautiful outdoor fireplaces on the market.

On clear nights in the winter or summer, Brett and I could snuggle-up to the fire and listen to the creek babble past.  Maybe a hot tub in the back yard?  Life is good when you are soaking in a hot tub on a cold night.

Underfoot, I would like to see decorative pavers to match our slate foyer and indoor fireplace.

Bringing it all together!
Driveway
Parking has been a concern since we moved under the Old Walnut Tree.  The narrow driveway can complicate using the ramp on the van.  And someone always feels the frustration of being double-parked.  In the alternative, our guests often park on the street, then step directly into a gooey mud pit.
A possible solution is to relocate our parking.  We do not access the front yard, so let’s utilize the lawn.  I’ve pondered pouring concrete in the front yard to create additional parking.  The new parking area could be jazzed up with flower pots or boxes.  It would minimize the need to mow the lawn and showcase colorful blooms.
The existing driveway could be fenced and accessed by an adorable gate.  Thus, providing more utilitarian parking and a secluded patio area.

The outdoor remodel will take time, money, and hard work to realize.  In the meantime, it’s fun to dream.  Do you have suggestions for our dreamy outdoor entertaining area?

Welcome Home MOH

Our moms are sisters and best friends.  Tara Lee and I are more like sisters than cousins.  And we are more like best friends than sisters.  Tara Lee was born nine years and one day after me.  She came into this world during my ninth birthday party.  She is greatest birthday present I have ever received.

It has been a pleasure to watch Tara grow from a furry roley poley baby to a beautiful, intelligent, and thoughtful adult.  Tara inspires me with her generosity, caring nature, and acceptance of others.  She shines when she enters a room because of her warm presence and super model beauty.  I certainly love my baby cousin!

Tara exhibits courage and determination in all areas of her life.  Motivated by her own unwavering work ethic, she started her first job at the age of 14.  The steam burns on her arms and hands will convince you that she hasn’t taken a day off from working as a barista since.  She successfully balanced school, work, and extracurricular activities throughout high school.  Now at WSU, she earns outstanding grades while being an active member of her sorority.  I’m so proud!

Last spring, Tara Lee approach Brett and I for assistance in planning her next great adventure… studying abroad in Rome!  In 2002, I studied abroad in Sevilla, Spain.  Nine years later and I still reminisce about my life changing experiences in Europe.  Tara has witnessed my endless tales from abroad, enthusiasm for travel, and unrelenting encouragement for her to depart on her own foreign adventures.  Encouragement?  Maybe we can call it “pressure”.
(Spain 2002)
Brett helped Tara create a budget and research financial assistance.  Meanwhile, I assisted her with packing cute tops for the discotechs and education on Michelangelo’s masterpieces.  In January 2011, Tara boarded her plane to face the world with all the courage and determination she created within herself during her 20 years.  My hero!

Last weekend, Tara returned home from her great adventure in Rome.  We counted down the minutes until she ran across our driveway into my arms for giant hugs and a heartfelt “Welcome Home”.  Tara speaks of Rome with adoration, reverence, and nostalgia.  I felt a rush of pride when she thanked Brett and me for supporting her in what she called a, “life changing experience.”
Tara left her comfort zone as a generous, caring, determined young woman.  Tara returned from Rome just as generous, caring, and determined, but with a greater appreciation for what the world has to offer.  For Tara Lee, the best is yet to come!

Crank Up the Adele

“Music washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life.” By Berthold Auerbach
Music permeates my childhood memories.  Viv used to crank Tom Petty until the house shook while she vacuumed.  Chores were so much more tolerable when we all danced as we cleaned.  John and I would sing The Boss at the top of our lungs from our car seats in the back of Mom’s old Volvo.  My Dad is famous for his wicked air guitar and tireless loyalty toward The Who.

Music can illicit memories long forgotten, soothe a broken heart, and perpetuate love.

Like my father, I have always enjoyed British musicians.  Keith Richards can rock my socks off, the Spice Girls never went out of style, and Lady Sovereign speaks to the Renton-girl in me.

Today, I sing the praises of Adele.  Her first album, 19 (her age at the time of its release), received instant acclaim in the UK and moderate success in the US.  I enjoy her rich voice, range, and confidence to belt it out.  I’m a sucker for powerhouse ballads.
In January 2011, Adele released her second album, 21 (again, her age).  This album has not left my Zune history since its release.  Adele’s sultry voice returns with unapologetic raw emotion.  The sound is unique, refreshing, but hints at my favorites from the past.  It reminds me of classic American blues with contemporary rhythms that make me tap my toes.  I listen to 21 to get energized for work and to decompress after a long day.
Have you heard Adele?  Are you also addicted to her latest album?
