There are so many things I love about books, beyond content. I love to wander bookstores for hours on end. Touching shiny book covers. The smell of a new book. The odor of an antique book. Brittle textures and fragile pages. Finding an old photo once used as a bookmark. The three adjectives I write at the end of every book. Reminders of who I was at the time I first read the book. Accordingly, I purchase my books and never part when them.

Perhaps less whimsically, but equally obsessive, my brother also collects books. He is only half joking when he dresses in his velvet sports jacket, smokes a corncob pipe, and leafs through leather bound books. It’s genetic.

As a result, John and I have collected hundreds of books over the years. Every time we move, the tubs of packed books travel along with us. Last year, my Dad meticulous designed and carpentered a beautiful bookshelf during our remodel Under the Old Walnut Tree. Our beloved books finally would have a home-sweet-home of their own.

Unfortunately, we haphazardly threw the books on the new bookshelf without much thought. Brett’s books, DVD's, and games were added to the chaos to create a cluttered mosaic. Over the last year, the books have stared at me. Glaring and accusatory. They scream, “Organize me, ya slob!”

A few months ago, I finally decided to fight back against the disorganization. First, John and I begrudgingly sorted through our collection. Less desirable books were donated, some were stored in the garage, and the most attractive remained on the shelves. It was hard to part with those old friends. Thankfully, Brett was there to beat the monkey off our backs during the toughest decisions.

Next, I joined Pinterest specifically to create a inspiration board of my design ideas. In the spirit of our kitchen aesthetic, I sought a sterile white palette with splashes of color. Crisp green apple, summer orange, and nautical blue.

For days, I simply stared at the bookshelf pondering my next organizational move. Brett implemented my design to excruciating detail. Often with two or three adjustments. I make Howard Hughes look practical.

I used white photo boxes to store our DVD’s and Xbox games, alphabetized of course. I filled woven baskets with extra books and remote controls. Out of sight, out of mind.

Finally, the teamwork and patience unveiled a final product. Yet, I still find myself staring at the shelves, “Still too cluttered. Must reorganize. The way of the future. The way of the future. The way of the future.”

In the end, I am proud to say that my Dad, John, Brett, and I all contributed to create a beautiful tribute to our beloved collection of books.

A Warm Cup of Downton Abbey

Historical fiction has smothered me in infatuation once again. Recall, http://undertheoldwalnuttree.blogspot.com/2011/09/kate-mortons-castles.html This time, Netflix innocently suggested Downton Abbey. Downtown Abbey is my cup of tea. A warm cup of English tea with a spot of crack on the side. I’m fully addicted.

Downton Abbey is a British TV show that first premiered in September 2011 to widespread acclaim. After receiving six Emmy awards, American audiences took notice. By 2011, Guinness Book of World Records named it the most critically acclaimed English-language television show of the year. In Seattle, the show appears on KTCS (our local PBS station). On Sunday nights, Downton consistently receives first or second ratings in our market. Because it’s awesome.

The first episode opens with news of the sinking of the Titanic. It’s April 1912 in the English countryside’s Grantham Estate. Living on the Estate are the Lord and Lady Grantham with their three unmarried daughters and numerous service staff. The Titanic buried with it two male heirs to the estate, leaving the estate, money, and title to a distant heir apparent. And the family is not happy!

Downstairs, the series examines the lives of the service staff. Gossip, love, loss, greed, death, and war. Wait, those are the reoccurring themes upstairs too! The seventh episode of the first series ends just as it had commenced, with bad news: England is at war.

Now, I’m on a mission to find the second series. The final episode erred last week, so I’ll carefully avoid all media outlets to prevent a potential spoiler. I’m sequestering myself.

Thankfully, my husband indulges my latest infatuation. He worked around that house while I was glued to the TV. He never criticized my horrendous English accent. He didn’t even bat an eye when I ordered Harper to “bring me my afternoon tea without haste!” The Love of My Life makes our humble home Under the Old Walnut Tree feel like our very own noble estate.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day! It is one of the very few days of the year when it is socially acceptable to be ooey-gooey-mushy-gooshy-in-love. Valentine’s Day was made for Brett and me! This year, we are celebrating our love in Austin, Texas. Yeehaa!

In the meantime, just a taste of the ooey-gooey-mushy-gooshy LOVE that will unfold tomorrow. Brett received this little note from Cupid earlier this week. Cupid is such a thoughtful baby!

Snowpocalypse 2012

The snow was doughy as it danced in the street lights. We stood on the corner of 17^th and 47^th watching from a safe distance. Dressed in our cutest stocking caps with matching gloves and scarves, we couldn’t risk getting nailed by a snowball. My glittery eye shadow would not have survived a direct hit. In the median, a few hundred frat boys engaged in a snowball war. It was the only time I recall snow actually sticking while I attended UW.

The next morning, Suzannah and I had Spanish class together. We meticulously prepared adorable Snowday costumes, jumped on the scooter, and set out for campus. Two blocks away from the house. That’s where we got stuck. Those same battling frat boys were eager to push the scooter out of the snow bank, but Suzannah would have to walk the rest of the way to class. Snow has always sparked the possibility of adventure for me. Exciting to anticipate, beautiful to look at, and suffocating to my mobility.

This year the anticipation was palpable. For days prior to the first flake falling, every news channel assured me that we were about to experience Snowpocalypse. Jeff Renner declared that every person in Western Washington was going to die of one of the following catastrophes: (1) buried in 12 feet of snow; (2) fiery car crash on i-5; (3) BBQ exploding in your living room; (4) speared by a falling icicle; (5) sprinkling street salt on your organic jicama fries; or (6) suicide because I can’t watch The Kardashians when the power is out.

My darling Husband enthusiastically contributes to the region-wide freak-out mentality. He subscribes to every weather alert available on his Windows 7 Mobile. He constantly refreshes http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/ at the mere possibility of an update. And he text messages me every three minutes to remind me to come straight home at the first sign of precipitation. His paranoia is so endearing!

On Tuesday, we woke up to bare and dry streets. Of course the weather reports were wrong, so Brett and I headed off to work. Approximately two hours into my work day, the snow began to fall in Seattle. And it was falling hard. It was time for the adventure to begin! My bus rescued me from the U-District, fully chained at a top speed of 30 MPH. After miles of reroutes and two hours of impatience later, I arrived in Issaquah to nuffin. No snow, rain, or nuffin.

The Love of My Life and I worked from home the rest of the day. Delighted to be home together, but annoyed that the weather reports had been wrong again. Oops, we spoke too soon. Snowpocalypse hit Issaquah that night and it snowed steadily through Wednesday. We had accumulated approximately four inches of pow-pow, when the snow turned to freezing rain. This effect created a one inch crust of ice over the powdery snow.

On Thursday morning, the trees in Issaquah gave up the fight. Limbs cracked all around the house. The snapping and crashing sounds keep us all on edge at Ramfuse Creekside. On edge and in the dark. We lost power around 7:00am on Thursday. The adventure continues!

Brett scattered candles around the house, while I snuggled up to the gas fire place. Hungry? No problem. Brett lit the gas stove with a match and cooked delicious soups. We spent next day and a half playing board games, napping, and entertaining Harper. I was also able to finish two books. Quite the productive adventure. Our indoor camping adventure came to an end Friday afternoon when the power came back on.

Friday night, Brett, John, Jill, and I deiced the car, shoveled the driveway, and journeyed to the Issaquah Brew House for dinner. As we were seated, we learned that most of the other customers were still out of power at their homes. BOOM! The power went out at the Brew House. Being adventurers, we finished our beers in the dark and traveled north for dinner at Coho Café.

Inevitably, power was restored throughout Western Washington, the snow melted, and we returned to our lives in a moderate climate.

The weather reports had been correct. My Husband’s paranoia had been founded. We did experience Snowpocalypse 2012 in Seattle. But, Snowpocalypse was not catastrophic. Snowpocalypse was a fun adventure. It was also a great opportunity for Love of My Life and I to snuggle-up Under the Old Walnut Tree.

A Birthday Fit for a Diva

Maureen came bouncing toward me with her long dark hair flopping on her shoulders. We were wearing matching purple sheep jammies with Big Sis and Lil Sis embroidery. The smile across her face was a welcomed surprise to me during an otherwise gloomy semester. It was September 2000 and I had a bad attitude. After a sun kissed summer at home, I was back at Chi Omega. The apartment at the sorority was cram packed with eight girls, my classes were grueling, and I was homesick.

My Lil Sis changed all that with one big hug in our matching PJs. Maureen and I spent the next semester engaged in hours of conversation and analysis. With Mary Poppins playing in the background, we blared the gangsta rap and glorified our diva idol, Britney Spears.

Our most serious conversations about religion or finances were punctuated with bouts of laughter about musicals and bi-ads. More often than not, I would drift asleep mid-conversation around 5:00am, just in time to get up again for our 9:00am classes.

Later in the day, Maureen and I reunited again at dinner before riding together on the scooter to the library. A detour for 2:00am Burger Hut with our matching diva costumes: flip flops, Chi Omega sweatshirts, and Northface fleases. Maureen’s diva personality had melted away my homesickness. To quote the senior couch, Maureen transformed Chi Omega from a house to my home.

On Saturday, Maureen’s daughter celebrated her first Birthday. Taking after her beautiful parents, Maeve is a gorgeous baby. Her dark hair is just beginning to frame her cherub face and striking blue eyes. Of course, Maeve also inherited her mother’s nocturnal sleep patterns and vocal opinions. Yes, our sweet Baby Maeve is also a diva.

With Maeve’s flare for the dramatic, it should come as no surprise that her first Birthday Party was filled with excitement. On our way the party, the snow began to fall in inches around Kirkland. By time we reached Monroe, the streets were covered.

Pulling into Maureen and Vitaliy’s cul-de-sac, our giddiness over the snow had turned to genuine worry. And our worries were founded. Only five minutes prior to our arrival, another party guest’s car had skidded down the driveway and crashed into Maureen and Vitaliy’s garage. This 1st Birthday party is starting off with a bang!

Inside, Maureen prepared an amazing party. She paid special attention to detail with pink and green owl cookies, poke-a-dot accents, and tissue flower bouquets. Hoot Hoot! The food was delicious too: beef and veggie kabobs, egg rolls, fruit salad, cupcakes, and cereal tray for the kiddos. And oh the kiddos! Our friends certainly make adorable children: Dylan, Maddie, Brody, Coleman, Camryn, Brooklyn, Jameson, Emmett, and Ben. Pictures of Maeve on the big screen reminded us of how quickly they grow.

When it was time for the cake, Baby Maeve expressly declared her distaste for the song, “Happy Birthday to You” with giant sobs. Through the commotion, Maureen simply smiled down on Maeve. All the worries of the day vanished. For a moment, sweet Baby Maeve melted away the snowstorm outside, just as Maureen has warmed my homesickness so many times over the years.

Divas come in all shapes, sizes, and age ranges. But, Maureen, Maeve, and I are three divas that own it! Happy Birthday, Maeve!

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

I blame Mr. Schelbert (my 11^th grade US history teacher). Moreover, I blame the books I have read and hours of the History Channel I have watched. Not once, did they ever mention the role of vampires in the Civil War. Of course Abraham Lincoln hated vampires. Vampires killed his mother, first love, best friend, and two sons. Vampires thrived in those days by hiding behind the slave trade. President Lincoln was the man to abolish both.

I just finished reading Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. In the past, I have befriended novels about the supernatural. I celebrate Stephanie Meyers’s vampires, Suzanne Collins’s apocalypse, and JK Rowing’s wizards. But, Vampire Hunter failed to satiate my thirst for literary blood.

The gist of the novel is that Abe learns his mother was killed by a vampire as payment for his father’s debt. Oh boy, does that make Honest Abe angry! Abe dedicates his life to ridding the world of vampires. His personal vendetta proves successful as he is trained to kill vampires from one of their own. Ya know who else was a vampire? John Wilkes Booth. Obvi.

My problems with this book were not so much regarding the plot. My problem with this book was primarily my own confusion. I struggled to define what was real and what was fiction. Ok, it’s clear that the vampire element was fiction. But, the novel also refers to historical cities, battles, political figures, news headlines, journals, and documents.

My problem with this book was perhaps more of a problem with myself. I was unable to set aside my love of history long enough to appreciate a work of fiction. Now that I’ve identified the problem, I’m back to reading memoirs and biographies.

However, this book does make me wonder what other historical figures may have been vampires. Edgar Allen Poe? Lizzie Borden? Maybe even Mr. Schelbert?!

La Luna de Miel

Happy 2012 to friends of Under the Old Walnut Tree! The last month fits into paradoxical categories of busy, productive, and relaxing. December certainly promises variety: racing to Bellevue Square for last minute gifts, paper-cut fingers from hours of wrapping, and napping on the couch after a giant Christmas dinner. For a moment, let’s leave December behind. Goodbye ice scrapers. So long runny noses. Adios polar bear slippers. Hello Mexico!

Three days after the Wedding of the Century, Brett and I boarded a plane for our Honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico.

After careful consideration, we selected Excellence Resort’s Playa Mujeres as a compromise between utter relaxation and historical intrigue. Playa Mujeres offered pristine beaches, all-inclusive services, and easy access to Mayan ruins. Thanks to Jeff, Sarah, and the Whelans for the recommendation!

Our itinerary required a layover in Dallas for approximately 8 hours. We were initially frustrated that the layover required us to stay in an airport hotel for a few hours before boarding a second plane to Cancun. In actuality, the layover was worry-free and comfortable. As newlyweds, the location was inconsequential. We were just thrilled to be husband and wife!

When we arrived on Mexican soil, we were inundated with the Spanish language. Amor! Hearing the Spanish all around me, I was energized and giddy. In hindsight, one of my favorite aspects of the trip was speaking Spanish, Spanish, and more Spanish. Brett’s genius shined as he effortlessly recalled Spanish vocabulary and participated in my lengthy conversations with new Mexican friends. Sharing the Spanish language with the Love of My Life gives me overwhelming joy.

Our Excellence Resort was positioned on the opposite side of the bay from Cancun’s hotel district, behind a series of gates and security guards.

The taxi pulled up to the front door, where our concierge greeted us with champagne and congratulations. “Bienvenidos, Mr. and Mrs. Rafuse ”! Like music to my ears.

Excellence Resorts redefined my understanding of “All-Inclusive”. My mental dictionary now defines all-inclusive as “never having to think about individual needs, desires, wants, wishes, or requirements”.

Food: The resort offered eight restaurants with all-inclusive menus: French, Mexican, Indian, Asian, Italian, lobster, tapas, and grill. Every day at noon, the beach became a ninth restaurant with its taco buffet. Our hotel room became the tenth restaurant with 24-hour comprehensive room service. The quality of the food was also noteworthy. Interesting cuisine, rich proteins, and fresh vegetables. I highly recommend the beef Carpaccio or tom ka soup. Yes, I ate raw beef in Mexico. Daredevil!

Drinks: Save water, drink something with a cocktail umbrella. If you imagine it, they will make it. We enjoyed ordering exotic drinks and traditional favorites. Brett’s line was, “Surprise me.” And the bartenders prepared a different treat with fruits, alcohols, and mixers. If Brett was slow to finish a drink, the bartender returned with something new to try. Even bottled water, juices, and sodas were abundant. Unfortunately, the wine didn’t meet our snobby standards. Red wine was available, but the variety was limited and one dimensional. Who needs wine when there are Bahama Mamas!?

Entertainment: Every night, a special event was scheduled in the common areas. In comparison to the variety show and ice skating performance on our cruise in 2009, the entertainment was merely average. I personally enjoy sultry lounge singers, but there was room for improvement within the Excellence entertainment department. Our favorite event was the Michael Jackson impersonator. Mr. & Mrs. Rafuse saw the show as an invitation to sing along to our favorite tunes. We’ll take opportunity to karaoke!

Service: Incredible service. Above and beyond. Each day Brett and I made the difficult decision of whether to have room service for breakfast or to eat at one of the restaurants. Following our gluttonous meal, we proceeded to the private pool.

Although there was a swim-up pool connected to our room, we preferred the private pool for its generous staff. The pool attendant reserved lounge chairs and umbrellas for us each morning. The bartender rushed over with interesting blended drinks and fresh fruit.

One of our favorite examples of excellent customer service was the private dinner on the balcony during a lightning storm. The waiter catered to our every need, while granting space for our privacy and romance. There was plenty of electricity all around!

As the days past, we got to know our favorite staff. Adan even invited us to attend his niece’s Quinceañera. Now, that’s customer service.

History: Remember how Brett and I compromised by selecting a Honeymoon that afforded the opportunity to visit Mayan ruins, read a countless plaques, and soak up the history? Oops. We opted out of the excursions. We forgot about the ruins. We didn’t learn a damn thing about history. We never left the resort.

Nature.

In truth, the swimming pool was greater than any historical site. I have always loved the water, but inaccessibility has generally robbed me of that passion. The water enables me to move otherwise sedentary legs, to walk across the pool floor, and to feel the delight of muscle strength. The only thing that made my pool experience more amazing was sharing it with my husband. Floating around the pool in Brett’s arms is euphoric. Quite simply, together with the Love of My life, I experienced pure happiness.

Summarily, our Honeymoon in Cancun was excellent. However, our Honeymoon in Issaquah is the true paradise. December might bring the chill, but there is plenty of warmth in our paradise Under the Old Walnut Tree. Feliz ano nuevo, todos!

Chi O Christmas Cookie Exchange

My darling Colleen has established an annual Chi O Christmas Cookie Exchange. When I learned that her house was accessible, I was ecstatic to join in the fun. Then, I read the rules:

1. All cookies should be homemade.

2. No plain chocolate chip cookies and no mixes.

3. Please bring 2 to 3 dozen, enough for everyone to have 2 or 3. (I will update the quantity if the guest list changes.)

4. The theme is "Christmas Cookies."

5. RSVP with what cookie you're bringing - no duplicates allowed.

These ladies take their cookies seriously. How could I possibly live up to those standards?! During the 3 months that we have been married, I have burnt, scarred, and scorched oven burns across both of my arms. http://undertheoldwalnuttree.blogspot.com/2011/04/never-cook-soup-in-your-bathrobe.html

My cooking process begins with a fantastic culinary idea. I’m going to make pumpkin bread! The process quickly deteriorates as I drop ingredients on the kitchen floor, my lap, and on Harper’s head. Brett kindly intervenes when I am simultaneously bleeding and swearing.

On Saturday, I announced to my husband, “I’m nervous about the cookie exchange tomorrow.” He was surprised that my enthusiasm for the event had evolved into fear. Brett immediately Binged a recipe for Snicker Doodles. He assured me that I would proudly walk into the cookie exchange with Christmas cookies that complied with the rules. We know Brett is an amazing chef, but Christmas cookies don’t come in BBQ flavor. Still nervous.

Although Brett has been fighting a cold, he bundled up and drove us to the grocery store for supplies. We walked hand-in-hand down the aisles, adding unfamiliar ingredients to the cart. That night, Brett measured, mixed, rolled, and sprinkled the ingredients. He baked the cookies to a golden brown. And they tasted scrumptious! Just as Brett had predicted, I was proud to exchange his Snicker Doodles at the Chi O party. Thank you, Baby!

On Sunday, we drove to Colleen’s home in Kirkland for the exchange. Her house is fashionable, creative, and utilitarian. She has designed a basement that takes advantage of the space available without compromising comfort and warmth. Her snack spread proved that light cooking can be decadent. After a few pomegranate totties, I was even eating the onion dip!

As always, it was wonderful to catch up with my sisters. Even our brief conversations were filled with inspiration and support. A ten minute conversation with my sisters is an invaluable reminder that life is better when shared with friends. I realized that my worries about baking were unfounded. These girls would love me regardless of the quality of my baked goods.

Oh, did I mention they are also hilarious? That’s the real reason I hang out with them. They make me laugh. They get to enjoy Brett’s delicious cookies, Brett gets to sample a dozen of their cookies, and I get to crack up with laughter. Stay-cation for Three

Winter in the Pacific Northwest is wearisome for most Seattleites. Although we have been blessed with a gorgeous autumn 2011, Seattleites never cease the rampant grumbles of, “Too cold, too rainy, too dark, too snowy, too Seattle.” In order to cure the seasonal depression, Brett and I have historically escaped to warmer climates: on a Caribbean cruise in December 2009 and to Las Vegas in 2010.

This year, we started discussing our annual December get-away just as soon as we arrived home from our honeymoon. Now that we are a fiscally responsible married couple, we decided to alter the tradition with a Stay-cation this year. Brett booked Hotel 1000 in Seattle for a weekend of rest and relaxation, all within the comfort of our own city. Other than spending quality time with the Love of My Life, I was most excited that Harpie was able to join in the Stay-cation also!

It turns out, poor little Harpie didn’t share my enthusiasm for the Big City. As soon as we pulled up to the hotel, Harper began shaking uncontrollably. The shaking continued through the lobby, reception desk, elevator, and finally into our room. He immediately ran to the doggie bed the hotel had provided, sat, and waited for us to tell him that we were returning home.

A few minutes into our Stay-cation, Harper began exploring his new turf. Comfortable with the digs, he calmed down enough to play ball and watch TV. Brett and I commenced a game of electronic Monopoly (thanks to Kim and Chanelle!), before having a delicious dinner at McCormick’s.

On Saturday, Brett continued to crush me at electronic Monopoly. No mercy for his Bride.

While Harper and I watched a movie, Brett played a round of virtual golf. Then, we spruced ourselves up for a night out at Brett’s company Christmas Party. He was undeniably handsome in a navy suit, gray shirt, and royal blue tie!

Before the party, we met up with two of our favorite people, Kyle and Cynthia!

Together, we walked to the Columbia Tower for the party. It is challenging with new names and faces, but everyone is warm and patient. I always feel welcome and thoroughly enjoy conversations with MS Ops peeps. The night was filled with amazing food, dancing, and flying casino chips. After midnight, we returned to the hotel, where Harper was peacefully chewing on a bone and watching Indiana Jones.

Our Stay-cation was a new experience for all three of us. Initial apprehension was converted into ultimate relaxation. Whether in Belize or Seattle, being together with the Love of My Life is the only way to vacation.

Ell-o Sea-ah-o!

Time and time again, I proudly proclaim my love for British musicians. http://undertheoldwalnuttree.blogspot.com/2011/05/crank-up-adele.html Sure, they bathe in the bubbly, experiment with mud sharks and groupies, and inevitably overdoes in skeezy bathrooms. But all the while, they are rocking my socks off!

This blog entry sings the praises of yet another crumpet of British musical glory. I blot the tears caused by Amy Winehouse’s death and Adele’s throat surgery with the blank white page of Mumford & Sons.

In 2007, Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall, and Ted Dwane joined together to create Mumford & Sons. They all share in the responsibility of playing guitar, drums, piano, banjo, and cello. Rising from West London’s folk scene, Mumford released their first album in 2009, Sign No More. Mumford & Sons subsequently received six Grammy nominations and a 2011 American Music Award for Best Alternative Rock Artist.

Earlier this week, Brett and I attended Mumford & Sons in concert. I surprised Brett with the tickets because he adores the band also. Brett can listen to a beloved CD on repeat for years without growing tired of the music. Dave Matthew’s Live at Luther College wore thin in his car until we ultimate sold the car last summer. Fortunately, Brett has excellent taste in music.

Mumford’s Sign No More has a cozy home on his Windows Phone, which he plays over the car speakers through Bluetooth technology (shameless Microsoft plug). For quite some time, the two of us have been singing along with Mumford at the top of our lungs in the car. We certainly make beautiful music together!

Before the concert, Brett treated me to Melting Pot for dinner. A meal of cheese, steak, lobster, and chocolate with the Love of My Life… heaven.

Stuffed to the brim, Brett and I walked over to Key Arena for the concert. We both felt old, tired, and grumpy amidst the hordes of teenage attendees. If you are wearing tights under your mini shorts, I am judging you. If you are wearing boots with your skinny jeans, I am judging you. If are wearing a stuffed animal stocking cap, I am judging you.

Then… BAM! My negativity and crankiness dissipated with the first stroke of the acoustic guitar from Mumford. The concert opened with rich four part harmony. They could easily be dressed in pristine gowns, holding chorus books at the front of the gothic cathedral in London. Marcus Mumford’s voice is identifiable amongst the velvety quartet.

Suddenly, the suspenseful crescendo is punctuated with a solitary cord. The divine choir is interrupted by exaggerated strum of the guitar and a blast from the drums. Rock on!

Marcus Mumford’s gravelly voice is drenched in authenticity. I closed my eyes and pictured him chugging Jameson from a greasy bottle. Or he’s eight years old, crouching with scabby knees on the cobblestones to play jacks with Frank McCourt. My imagination is interrupted when Marcus leans forward with his disheveled tweed vest and says, “Ell-o Sea-ah-O!” Swoon.

Move Over Movember

We survived Movember! Last night, Brett and I celebrated by shaving off his trucker mustache. Peace out, Mr. Scratchy-Itchy-Ucky-Mustache!

The best part of Movember is seeing Brett’s beautiful face clean shaven. He is even more gorgeous than I remember. I apologize in advance for our imminent PDAs, but we have to compensate for an entire month.

All grumbling aside, the purpose of Movember is to raise awareness and donations for men’s health issues. Considering all of the men in my life that I love so deeply, pared with Brett’s family connection to prostate cancer, Movember is a cause I enthusiastically support.

However, next year I vote we support that cause monetarily, rather than with facial hair, fellas. Moreover, whatever happened to bikini carwashes?

Miracle Whip: A New Thanksgiving Tradition

On Thursday, Brett and I hosted our first holiday. When I proposed the idea of hosting Thanksgiving this year, Brett's face became dark and serious.

"You know we are going to have our first holiday argument," he said.

I responded, "Why?! Should we go to Cle Elum instead?!"

Brett gently stroked my hand and said, "Baby, I love Miracle Whip on my turkey sandwiches."

Gasp. I kindly replied, "GROSS! I hate Miracle Whip!"

Agreeing to disagree in regards to Miracle Whip, we announced our intent to host Thanksgiving. It was our opportunity to showcase our amazing wedding gifts and Brett’s sensational cooking. At the risk of bragging… we NAILED IT!

The menu: Brett brined and roasted a 24 pound bird to perfection and his mashed potatoes were garlicy goodness. My dad prepared his decadent cranberry and mandarin orange sauce and world-famous dressing. Auntie’s devilled eggs and green bean casserole nearly stole the show.

Momsie blew the skeptics away with citrus and marshmallow yams and pumpkin cream pie. Tara and Tanner contributed asparagus/ham skewers and crescent rolls. Add that to my baked brie, macaroni balls, and cranberry/mango chutney and you’ve got yourself one heck-uva Thanksgiving dinner!

The guests: My family has always be fun, fun, fun, and it just got BIGGER! Erin and Greg stopped by to share the laughs and chocolate toffee squares. GOM arrived with whitty commentary and love advice.

GOM: Do you have a special lady in your life?

Tanner: Um. Huh?

GOM: Well, then enjoy them all!

The laughs: After dinner, we played Things (a board game we received from Sarah Rafuse). Laughing so hard we were crying, gasping for air in between laughter sobs, and memories we will hold onto forever.

The message: Thanksgiving challenges us to take the time to embrace our gratitude. A bone crushing hug from Auntie Caren. An inside joke with my Mom. Uncle Chuck cuddling Harper. Clever words of wisdom from GOM.

On this Thanksgiving and every day, I am thankful for my family. My family that I was born into and the family that I chose.

To my husband, I am grateful for all that you are and all that we will become together. Even if that means we have to keep Miracle Whip in the refrigerator. Ew.

The Seasons

A few months into our relationship, the Love of My Life and I visited Vancouver, Canada. A highlight of our trip was visiting Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. http://vancouver.ca/parks/parks/vandusen/website/

During the spring, visitors enjoy the emerging blossoms and vibrant colors of the gardens. Like all living things, those blossoms wilt and the colors fade. Our tour guide described the garden in the season of “death and decay”. However, Brett and I were amazed at the richness of the garden when we took a closer look. The colors had changed, but remained decadent in gold, orange, brown, and even purple.

Similarly, grape vines transition from bountiful berries to dried leaves during the winter season. And a few weeks ago, we experienced them first hand. This particular trip was dedicated to my brother John and his girlfriend Jill. John is more than a brother, he is a roommate!

John and I first shacked up in 2007 in an apartment on Lake Washington. In 2008, we purchased our home Under the Old Walnut Tree together and remain co-owners. John really is a great roommate for the following reasons:

1) OCD Tendencies

He’s a total germ-a-phobe, which makes him a hygienic and sanitary roommate. WARNING: He will spray you in the face with Lysol if you enter our home with a cold. It’s offensive, yet beneficial.

2) Tool Abundance

John works for Milwaukee Electrical Tool, allowing him access to the best tools in the business. He generously shares his tools with Brett and patiently instructs on their usage. WARNING: Our home is cluttered with gigantic boxes everywhere. Everywhere!

3) Hank

John’s 11 year old lab-mix is my favorite Ramquist. He is a big snuggly furry human Sparkle Bunny. Watching Hank and Harper play is a little slice of heaven. WARNING: There is Hank hair on everything we own!

4) Food

Normally, John nourishes himself with protein shakes, canned tuna, and cottage cheese. But, if you are lucky enough to catch him when he’s not counting his carbs, he is an amazing cook. He doctors-up my favorite Top Ramen into a delicacy. WARNING: His mustard sardine concoction will make you ralph.

5) Humor

John is not that funny. Brett made me add this one. WARNING: Most of John’s jokes are aimed at Jill or me. We’re not laughing.

6) Our Wedding

Remember that retaining wall at our wedding? That was John. He served as the Forman for the construction project with five of Brett’s friends. He patiently instructed the hard working boys on framing and concrete, while contributing his own blood, sweat, and tears. Remember all that amazing food at our wedding? That was John. He spent countless hours frying chicken, stirring sauces, and grilling veggies. All on the hottest day of the year. WARNING: Brett and I feel eternally indebted for John’s service.

John’s last great contribution as a roommate is his girlfriend Jill. Your first impression of Jill will be baffling. She is absolutely gorgeous. Her beauty illuminates with her thick platinum blonde locks, flawless skin, miniature waistline, and striking blue eyes.

Don’t stop there, I urge you to take a closer look at Jill. She certainly lives up to her childhood nickname, “Jill the Pill”. But, I truly love that Pill. Jill is silly, quirky, imaginative, and intelligent. She may whine and harp, but listen closely because her idea is likely to be smart and thoughtful. She infuses her intelligence with kindness and compassion. She generously shines her love on children, her family, and dogs. She has used her intelligence to graduate UW with honors, invent mobility equipment, and coordinate our wedding. Remember that bossy blonde at our wedding (no, not me!)? That was Jill. She calmed my nerves, eased my stresses, and tolerated my mental instability. Behind the scenes, Jill coordinated the ceremony, reception, food, drinks, and dessert seamlessly. My lifesaver!

Thus, to express our gratitude, Brett and I planned a weekend away in Yakima Valley wine country. On Friday night, one of our favorite couples joined us for dinner at Mojave at Desert Wind. Brett and I always enjoy any time we can spend with Ryan and Janelle. For the majority of the night, we were the only guests at Mojave. The quiet atmosphere was so relaxing and so peaceful. Great food, awesome wine, and amazing company.

On Saturday morning, the entire group headed to Chandler Reach for an amazing morning of touring and wine tasting. Wine is apparently the breakfast for champions because we were winning!

Reflecting on our experience at Van Dusen Botanical Gardens, the winemaker explained that the vines no longer held grapes, but would be hibernating until spring. The grapes had been picked, crushed, filtered, and stored in giant oak barrels in the cellar.

After sampling wine from the barrel, we enjoyed a delicious cheese, meat, and veggie lunch overlooking the vineyard.

With full tummies and a thirst for wine, we visited Terra Blanca on Red Mountain and Vintner’s Village in Prosser. Last year, we had a blast converting Ryan into a wine-o.

This year, it was Jill’s turn. She started wine weekend certain that she didn’t like wine. She left wine weekend with a greater appreciation for whites.

It’s only a matter of time before she moves on to the bold reds. Bring on the tempranillo and grenache!

John is my brother, roommate, and fellow-wine enthusiast. Jill is my kid sister, entertainment, and one of my best friends. Together, they add color and richness to every season of our lives.

Movember Day #15

But, he’s still adorable!

Movember of Manliness

Our home Under the Old Walnut Tree was built in the 1940’s. It started as a one bedroom, one bathroom mini-cabin, but has become our two bedroom, two bathroom home. Owning a house that is 70 years old means maintenance, maintenance, maintenance.

Our Wedded Bliss may not appear glamorous, but our routine is richly rewarding. We typically spend Saturdays on laundry and cleaning. Between Brett, my Dad, John, Harper, Hank, Snow White, and myself, the housework seems bottomless. Fortunately, as Newly Weds, we actually enjoy working together on these projects. I am so lucky that my generous husband takes on the breadth of our household chores, but I try to contribute as much as possible. Brett loads the washing machine, I fold clothes. Brett cooks dinner, I wash dishes. Brett vacuums, I Swiffer. Brett cleans the litter box, I glare at the cat. See! Wedded Bliss!

In addition to our ordinary house work, we always have a project in the works Under the Old Walnut Tree. This weekend was dedicated to winterizing the house. Brett and my Dad replaced a weathered, drafty, and moldy window in our bedroom with an energy efficient new window. Next, Brett stained and waterproofed our deck. He created a non-skid paint for the ramp to prevent my chair from sliding on icy mornings.

Lastly, he pained our front door purple. Ok, admittedly this is not a weatherizing project. But, I’ve always dreamed of having a purple front door. After a long day at work, our purple front door says, “Welcome back, family! Come on in to your cozy home! I have fresh baked cookies and warm cocoa waiting!” Thanks, Baby, for making my purple dreams come true.

Like me, you are probably amazed at the amount of work Brett accomplished this weekend. The truth is that he didn’t do it all alone. He had the assistance of his new mustache. Mustache = Manly. During the month of November, men around the country are growing mustaches to raise awareness for men’s health, including prostate cancer.

Happy 150th Birthday UW!

On November 4, 1861, the University of Washington opened its doors at its original campus at present-day Fourth Avenue and University Street in downtown Seattle. The UW consisted of a single room where the sole instructor, Asa Shinn Mercer , taught 30 students. This campus is currently the site of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel.

In 1895, the University moved from downtown Seattle to a one building (Denny Hall) campus in its current location. The state had purchased more than 600 acres of forested land on a site between Lake Union and Lake Washington.

The UW still owns the ten-acre original campus in downtown Seattle. Four white columns were preserved from the first building and relocated to The Sylvan Theater, a tree-enclosed hideaway southeast of Drumheller Fountain.

The columns represent “Loyalty,” “Industry,” “Faith,” and “Efficiency,” or “LIFE.” In 1929, University President Matthew Lyle Spencer witnessed two students “spooning” in the shadows of these pillars and officially banned kissing on campus. Fortunately for the Greek system, this ban was subsequently lifted.

My Big Fat Gypsy Halloween

I consider myself more than a Halloween Costume Contest Participant. I am a Halloween Costume Contest Winner. Well… most of the time. This year, I was not a Halloween Costume Contest Winner. In fact, I didn’t even place. Today on Under the Old Walnut Tree, we will reconstruct the events that led to my tragic defeat.

Janet Jackson’s Wardrobe Malfunction, Angelina Jolie, Barbie Corvette, Vampire in a coffin, Cinderella.

What do these costumes have in common? My art director, Tarah Pettersen. Tarah and I have a finely tuned professional relationship. I present the idea to Tarah through brainstorming sketches, Power Point slide deck, and a 15-page persuasive legal memorandum. Once she has a clear understanding of my vision, Tarah goes to work creating the blue print drawings, clay mock-up, and final product. Dozens of trips to Home Depot, hours of manual labor, and gallons of inhaled spray paint later, Tarah’s masterpiece is complete.

This year, I erroneously diverged from our historically successful partnership. FAIL! First, I came up with the idea for my costume. SNAP! Second, I told Tarah about it. ZAM! Third, I got lazy. BOO! Lastly, I am a Halloween Costume Contest looser. WAH!

But, give me some credit where it is due. My idea was awesome. On a Saturday afternoon this summer, while folding laundry with the Love of My Life, I came upon My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

It is a documentary series from the U.K. that follows Irish Traveler Brides on the journey to their wedding days. “Irish Travelers” or “Irish Gypsies” are a nomadic group of Irish national origin with unique traditions, dialect, and culture. Historical and present day Irish Traveler children are raised outside of public education, resulting in high illiteracy rates and unemployment. As devoted Catholics, the majority of Irish Travelers marry in their teenage years. And oh what a wedding spectacular!

Clearly, I have plenty in common with the young brides on My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. An admiration of pink, tulle fabric, glitter, sparkles, and make-up. As a Halloween costume idea, it was oh-so-fitting. All I need is a Halloween Costume Contest.

Our dear friends Kyle and Cyn throw an outstanding Halloween Party every year. Kyle is an extraordinary person and friend. He generously gives his time to his friends and family by fully committing to nurturing these relationships. His humor is playful, silly, and awkwardly dark. Because he is exceptionally intelligent, he constantly entertains me with his wit and sarcasm. But, Kyle is more than just laughs. He listens attentively, genuinely cares, and offers thoughtful insight. Brett and I consider ourselves blessed every second we spend in Kyle’s presence.

Above all else, Kyle’s best attribute is his girlfriend Cynthia. She has always been a remarkable friend to Brett, but I am honored to say that she is now one of my friends too. Cyn is as sweet as her delicious cupcakes, as bright as her smile, and as silly as her cartoon t-shirts. Cyn carries serious conversations with educational insight. Just a moment before I am thoroughly intimidated by her genius, she tosses the purple locks of hair away from her face. Suddenly, I am reassured that Cyn is the perfect balance of intelligence and approachability. She’s a gem!

Kyle and Cyn infuse their dedicated and entertaining personalities into every aspect of their Halloween party. From the elaborate decorations to the yummy treats, every guest appreciates the lengths Kyle and Cyn go to as they prepare for the party.

This year, Brett and I devoured the comfort food-themed treats. Mac & Cheese, little smokies, spooky cupcakes, bacon candy, vodka gummies, and pizza rolls. They even had our favorite beer: Rogue Dead Guy! Brett had a blast playing pumpkin pong with the boys, while I caught up with Sarah (Static Cling), Joe & Anne (Charlie Brown & Lucy), and the Plevas (El Dia de Los Muertos).

Finally, the costume contest arrived. I looked around the room at Star Wars, Duff Man, an inappropriate Priest, the Wizard of Oz, and Magnum PI. The fantastic costumes showed effort and creativity. They deserved to win the contest and I honorably stepped aside.

Admittedly, I didn’t deserve to win the costume contest this year. Maybe, I learned that Halloween isn’t all about winning. I certainly had a wonderful time with a group of wonderful friends. Of course, I next year I am definitely WINNING... Tarah, we have work to do!

Rachelle &Kyle's Glittery Engagement

In 2001, I met Rachelle for the first time. I clearly recall her visited to Chi Omega during rush. She had silky thick hair, a sparkling smile, and plush eyes. Maureen talked to her first and pointed her out to me. Before I even talked to her, I knew we would be friends. My assessment was based superficially on her awesome make-up. As a make-up junky myself, I noticed her extreme shadow and exaggerated liner. Despite it being mid-afternoon, we were both wearing glitter. Yes, a match made in make-up heaven.

Rahelle not only became my sister in Chi Omega, but also Maureen and my roommate. Amidst the constant confetti atmosphere in the A.P.T., she contributed sophistication, tranquility, confidence, and maturity. As a freshman, she knew what she wanted out of life and dazzled us with her determination to get there. Ya see, Rachelle glitters on the outside and from within.

Last Friday, Rachelle’s boyfriend Kyle asked her to marry him. And she said, YES!

In advance, Kyle reached out to the Chi Omegas as a part of his weekend-o-engagement in Seattle. A brave boy for entrusting 15+ excited ladies with an engagement secret, but it paid it paid off.

Rachelle, Kyle, Coleman, and Camryn entered the private dining room at Row House, were the Chi O’s waited.

Sarah, Heather, and Taylor baked and decorated festive R+K cookies.

Trisha brought a cake!

All of the guests signed a picture frame with best wishes.

To Rachelle and Kyle, congratulations on your engagement. You are taking the next step hand-in-hand towards your forever together. Your dreams will come true every day, time and time again. The Happily Ever After truly does it exist. Aw, I sure do love my husband!

Turkey Tastes Better on Pretty Plates

Last weekend John and I celebrated our 3^rd Anniversary of home ownership by filling the driveway mudpit with gravel. (I know, I know… three years and still no House Warming Party!) Thank you John and Baby for slaving away on the rainy gravel project.

I recall the first time we visited the house Under the Old Walnut Tree in September 2008. One of my favorite aspects of the home was the large countertop.

My imagination immediately filled the space with casserole dishes, pies, and a gigantic turkey. After our extensive kitchen, living room, foyer remodel, we are finally ready to commit to that endeavor. Ramfuse Creekside is hosting Thanksgiving 2011!

Over the last month, I have nearly backed out dozens of times.
Do we have enough room? Can we cook a turkey? Will anyone show up?

Repeatedly, my darling husband calmly talked me off the ledge, “We can add an extra table. I can cook a turkey. If you cook it, they will come.” Nervous about my own value-add, I have been researching recipes and decoration. Crate and Barrel ultimately sealed the deal. Even if I burn the butternut squash soup and microwave King’s Hawaiian rolls, our decorations will be lovely.

Our Rehearsal Dinner 9.9.11

Wedding photos, wedding photos! Where fore art thou wedding photos!? I married the Love of My Life six and a half weeks ago. Oh how time flies when you are in love! 9.10.11 was a blur of kisses, hugs, burlap, and river rocks. Perhaps it was the 100 degree heat, but my memories from the Big Day appear melted and blurred.

Thank heavens, our photographer emailed today that she will send the pictures out on Monday. Patience, Jessica, patience. Another reason I desperately long to receive our pictures is to create and send our Thank You notes. Brett and I are so appreciative of the our guests and gifts, we are excited to convey our gratitude.

Similarly, Brett and I had enthusiastically looked forward to our Rehearsal Dinner on 9.9.11 because intimate setting provided a unique opportunity to shout the insufficient words, "THANK YOU!" Brett and I frequently discuss how much we appreciate the contributions our families and bridal party have made to the individuals we have become and the relationship we have built. We share an insatiable desire to adequately thank our families and close friends.

Neither Brett nor I slept well the night before our Rehearsal Dinner. I woke up every few hours literally smiling at the thought of marrying my best friend. What a glorious dream come true!

Of course, the reality of the day before our wedding was hard work. We set up tables, chairs, centerpieces decorations, and cleaned everything.

And then there was the food. As my family prepared food for 180 wedding guests and 50 Rehearsal Dinner guests, we nearly forgot to feed our hard working crew on Friday. Thank goodness for Joe and Kyle! The boys took a break from slaving away on the house to pick up a truck load of McDonalds. They were our lifesavers!

Over the years, Brett has cultivated his meat craft to a level of mastery. But, every culinary genius has to start somewhere. For that, we have Spencer to thank. Spence is Brett’s best friend from Texas. Long before I met Spence, Brett spoke of him with pride and admiration. Brett and Spencer share a friendship that extends indefinitely across a dozen years and thousands of miles. They have a bro-mance, a bond, and a brotherhood.

I had the pleasure of meeting Spencer, his parents, and his wife Sarah during Christmas 2009. I instantly understood why Brett consistently speaks so fondly of the Whelans. Spencer is grounded, reliable, wickedly intelligent, and accepting. He chooses his words carefully, listens intently, and exudes loyalty.

During our trip to Texas in 2010, Sarah Whelan and I had the opportunity to develop our own friendship. Sarah is spunky, enthusiastic, fun, and caring. She playfully teases the boys and Gucci, but is capable of the most compassionate and heartfelt conversations. We bonded over our love for our husbands, our books, our dogs, and Colt McCoy.

Summarily, the Whelans are an amazing couple for so many reasons. But, Spencer’s BBQ skillz surely increase their awesomeness. Before our Rehearsal Dinner, Spencer and Sarah worked the outdoor kitchen as the delicious smells filled the valley.

After the ceremony run-thru at the barn, we returned to the house for ribs, brisket, rolls, potatoes, and corn. For dessert, we were treated to strawberry shortcake. The menu perfectly suited the summer weather, the intimate setting, and the spirit of family tradition.

Finally, it was time for Brett and me to give thanks. We distributed gifts to our family and bridal party with long-winded thank yous that still failed to fully express our gratitude. Brett had knives engraved with the Groomsmen’s names. I am so proud of him for thoughtfully selecting gifts that reflected his passion for meat and his appreciation for his guys.

For the Bridesmaids, I selected gifts that I believed spoke to the message I wanted to convey: My Bridesmaids are my family. They are the sisters I chose. All of the women in my family wear Ellensburg Blue Agates.

Our Blues are with us every moment of the day, every event, every memory. Now my Bridesmaids share in our family heritage by wearing their own Ellensburg Blues.

Like the night of our engagement, I was overwhelmed with gratitude to the point of mild sobbing during our Rehearsal Dinner.

Between tears and gasps for oxygen, I looked out across the patio to the most amazing friends and family in the world. Brett and I are truly blessed to be surrounded by a support system of generosity and unconditional love. As I look back to all the events leading up to our wedding, our Rehearsal Dinner brilliantly shines.

The Sisters Rafuse

Brett’s love for his family has always inspired me. On our first date, he glowed as he described his brothers, parents, and Gom. On our third date, Brett introduced me to the Brothers Rafuse. Just like Brett, I soon looked forward to nights out with the Brothers Rafuse. Both Greg and Jeff are warm, welcoming, conversational, kind, and hilarious.

Conversations with Jeff are rich and intelligent. From real estate to music to mountaineering, Jeff exudes knowledge.

Greg is the perfect balance of sweet, funny, ambitious, and smart. I endlessly giggle at his his silly jokes and find comfort in his brotherly hugs.

During 2010, Jeff and Greg both married amazing women. I remember being so nervous to meet the lady friends. These ladies were the gatekeepers to the Brothers Rafuse. They had supported all the boys during the best of times and the most difficult. They had earned their positions as gatekeepers to the Rafuse boys. And who was I to knock on the Rafuse door?

The first time I met Sarah and Erin, they both hugged me. Just as they have hugged me every time since. The gatekeepers unlocked the door and I ran in as quickly as I could. I longed to be part of this family.

Jeff’s wife Sarah is just as intelligent as her husband. She is an amazing listener, supporter, and lover of all things Pug. Sarah glues the family together with her thoughtful ideas and meticulous planning. Sarah remembers every birthday and organizes every holiday.

Erin is every girl’s best friend. She is silly, spontaneous, energetic, and protective. Erin shines bright when a friend is down, cheers loudly to support her loved ones, and lusts for life. Erin will be there through thick and thin, with a glass of wine and a hug.

On 9.10.11, these two amazing women officially became my sisters. Together, we are the Sisters Rafuse. Brett’s family is now my family, a true blessing.

Last Friday, the Brothers headed to downtown Issaquah for a boys’ night of pizza and bar hopping. The Sisters Rafuse took the opportunity to plan a girls’ night of our own. Sarah arrived to Ramfuse Creekside with Boboli mini-pizzas and all the topping we could want. Erin was armed with endless Halloween candy. Heather (honorary sister) shared her homemade cupcakes with spooky sprinkles.

The plan was to make our own pizzas and watch scary movies. My husband is not fond of scary movies, so I was eager to get my fill of fear. And then the power went out!

Our scary movie night just got a little too spooky! Thankfully, John located the flashlights, lit the candles, and started the BBQ. The Sisters Rafuse won’t let a little storm keep us down.

The BBQ’d pizzas were awesome and we settled in for an old fashion board game night.

By time the power came back on, we were full of sugar, laughs, and anticipation for the movie. 28 Days Later had all the gore and fear I had been hoping for. Yes, Brett would hate it. But, the girls had a great time screaming at the zombies and cheering for the good guys.

I must have been more scared than I thought… As soon as the movie ended, I looked around our dark house, doubted the ferocity of my 15 lb. guard dog, and called Brett. “So, Baby, when do you think you’ll be home?” The Love of My Life hurried home to protect Harpie and me from the zombies.

Life has taught me that Sisterhood comes in all shapes and sizes. I cherish my high school sisters, college sisters, and cousin-sister. The Sisters Rafuse are a beautiful example of the unique, precious, and powerful love that women share for one another. I love my family and I am so proud to be a Rafuse!

Fish, Family, and Friends

Last May, I walked into town to meet the ladies for dinner. “Hey! Hey, neighbor!”, I heard from behind me. I turned around to see an older man jogging toward me. As he caught his breath, he said, “Hi, I’m your neighbor, Danny. I just wanted to let you know that we are having a party for Salmon Days. It starts at 3:00.” I responded, “Oh. Hi. Great. But, isn’t Salmon Days in October?” Danny looked at me as though I misunderstood him. “Of course Salmon Days in is October!” Of course. How could I be so remiss?

But, Danny isn’t the only Issaquahnian who gets excited for Salmon Days. Brett and I look forward to the first weekend in October every year. As the leaves turn and the chill in the air arrives, Issaquah prepares to welcome the salmon home. In 1936, the federal government created the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery to restore the depleted salmon runs in Issaquah Creek. The once abundant salmon population had suffered from years of logging, coalmining, and habitat pollution. At the hatchery, Chinook, coho, and steelhead thrived. In 2010, approximately 3,500 salmon returned to the hatchery to spawn as adults.

In 1970, the City of Issaquah began its Salmon Days Festival to celebrate the return of the salmon. During the first weekend in October, the two-day event includes the Grande Parade, arts and crafts vendors, international foods, five stages of live entertainment, and hatchery tours and displays. The best part of Salmon Days is the free admission!

Ramfuse Creekside is the perfect location to celebrate Salmon Days. We are located only a couple blocks from the action. Right in our backyard, we watch salmon swimming upstream to spawn.

This year, everyone met at our house by 9:00am. My Mom, Auntie Caren, Tara Lee, and Laurie made the pilgrimage over the pass.

Our future neighbors, the Giners, bring tasty treats and laughter every year. Curtis, Byron, Katy, Kaki, John, and Beana rounded out the guest list with enthusiasm.

Brett’s breakfast was amazing! He whipped-up French toast with fruity and sugary fixin’s, bagels with cream cheese, capers, lox (hooray for salmon!), diced eggs, and onions, and breakfast casserole. Our friends and family filled their bellies with breakfast and their cups with coffee, Smith & Wessons, Bloody Mary’s, and Mimosas. Nom.

Our next stop was the Grande Parade. For some reason, gorgeous floats from all over Washington (and Canada) journey to Issaquah for the parade. I’m accustomed to the endless conga line of fire trucks and more fire trucks at the Cle Elum parade, so the elaborate floats were quite a treat. I enthusiastically applauded for Hazen cheer and booed Liberty everything. Sorry, but some rivalries are forever.

As the parade concluded, the Ramfuse Creekside posse meandered down to Front Street. Brett and I held hands while we poked our noses into the tents filled with photography, metalwork, paintings, candles, and wood carvings. Eventually, we joined the rest of the Ramfuses at the H&H Tavern for free popcorn and drinks. Our pub crawl continued until we finally reached the Rolling Log, where we watched football and rocked the jukebox.

Before the sunset, the Ramfuse group was tuckered-out from hours of salmon celebrating, cocktails, and laughs. Brett and I held hands for stroll home. On the way, Brett and Jeff bartered with the food vendors for wood fired pizzas, gyros, and elephant ears at half price. Nom, nom.

Every year, Salmon Days leaves us with a wealth of memories. Part of the magic is thinking back fondly to Salmon Days past: Greg & Erin’s engagement, John Bourne’s adventures, and Jeff’s plastic knife.

My secret is that I don’t even eat salmon. Honestly, I find their spawning to be rather morbid. But, I do enthusiastically celebrate their return. Thank you fishies for giving us another reason to enjoy our beautiful town with our wonderful family and friends. Just like Danny, I can’t wait to celebrate Salmon Days again next year!

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to inquire about Metro/ Sound Transit’s design, maintenance, user training, and implementation of mobility assistive ramps and lifts.

I am an individual with a disability that requires me to use an electric wheelchair for mobility. In the past, I have been pleased with the policy requiring coaches to have mobility assistive devices. These ramps and lifts enable me to use public transportation every day. Because of these services, I am able to work as an attorney and actively participate in my beloved Seattle-metropolitan community.

However, the events of the last few months have dissolved my enthusiasm and confidence in Metro/ Sound Transit’s dedication to providing transportation to individuals with mobility impairments. In or around June 2011, I began riding Sound Transit 542 from Redmond to the University District. No fewer than three times, deficient lifts have encumbered my usually smooth ride. I have no knowledge as to the exact reasons for the problems with the lifts. Based on my observances and experiences, I speculate that the problems were a derived from a combination of mechanical failure and operator error. Certainly, the problems raise questions as to the sufficiency of Sound Transit’s policies and practice for maintaining lifts and training operators to implement these devices.

On each occasion, I have presented my concerns to operators and supervisors. I have expressly requested that these employees raise concerns about Sound Transit’s policies and practices regarding services for individuals with mobility impairments. A week or two passes and the lift fails again. Another week or two passes and the lift fails again. Between the three incidents on ST 542 and two incidents on Metro 214 over the last three months, I estimate that I have wasted approximately six hours trapped inside a coach because of lift failures and/or operator error. I do not exaggerate this calculation. Clearly, this is unacceptable by any standard of customer service.

Last night, I met my breaking point. As you may recall, we experienced our worst rainstorm of the season. I left the comfort of the bus stop shelter to board Metro 214 on Maple & 12^th in Issaquah. The operator lowered the lift, I rolled on, and she lifted the flap that prevents the chair from rolling backward. At that moment, the lift failed. I was trapped outside the bus, in the rain, unable to exit the lift or enter the coach. The rain seemed perversely aware of my predicament as it proceeded to pour, soaking me through my rain jacked, sweater, pants, socks and shoes. The kind operator lent me an small umbrella that covered either my chair’s electrical unit or my legs, not both. As the operated attempted to comfort me by informing me that the supervisors were merely twenty minutes away, I began to sob. I suppose even someone accustomed to the unreliability of mobility assistive devices has their breaking point.

Upon arrival, the supervisor lowered the prohibitive flap and I was able to roll away. My brother kindly left work to pick me up from the bus stop as I was too emotionally upset to continue on home using the bus. He arrived to the bus stop to find me soaking wet from the rain and tears. Tears and clothing dry. My chair appears to be working fine despite the shower it received. Today is a new day.

In fact, today I loaded ST 556 to the U District from the Issaquah Transit Center. The driver loaded the other passengers, lowered the ramp (not the lift), and I rolled in. As he struggled to close the doors, I boiled with frustration. In this instance, the doors could not close because the ramp was not fully retracted. An additional three to five minutes passed before the driver received proper instructions by phone on retracting the ramp. Thus, the totality of these incidents leaves me writing to you from a place of disappointment and frustration.

I will continue to utilize public transportation. I will practice patience and tolerance with your well intentioned employees. I understand the constraints businesses are under in providing adaptive equipment for individuals with disabilities. However, I respectfully request that Metro and Sound Transit reevaluate their existing policies and practices for designing, maintaining, training, and implementing mobility assistive devices. I am testimony that the current policies and practices are not working.

For the sake of rider safety, customer service, and process improvement, please let me know what I can do to assist in the reevaluation of current insufficient policies and practices. I look forward to hearing from you regarding Metro and Sound Transits proposed process for improving its current policies and practices.

As a follow-up to my email dated October 12, I am placing Sound Transit on notice of an additional lift malfunction from this morning. I attempted to board the 542 from 40th and i-520. The operator loaded the other passengers before deploying the lift. Unfortunately, the bus knelt too low, causing the lift to hit the curb without deploying. For the next five minutes, the operator attempted to manipulate the ramp. Finally, the lift successfully deployed and I loaded the bus without further incident.

Jecca's Last Rodeo

Best. Bachelorette Party. Ever. And I’m not just saying that because it was MY Bachelorette Party. Of course, I do have the advantage of the best guest list ever, the best girlfriends ever, and the best fiancé ever. Fortunately, these superlatives culminate in a Bachelorette Party that will go down in history as The. Best. Ever.

Growing up, I rarely fantasized about my wedding day. I recall girls in high school subscribing to bridal magazines and putting dibs on their favorite wedding ideas. Not me. I admit to responding to these girls with the following: “I don’t know much about weddings, but one thing I know for sure is that I’m going to Vegas for my Bachelorette Party. Ayayaya!”

That all changed when I finally found my Groom. I no longer envisioned the rip-roaring-table-dancing trip to Vegas. I cursed the creepy dudes at the club hitting on the Bride-to-Be. I became anxious at the thought of voluntarily leaving the Love of My Life to wander the streets of Vegas. Nope, if I was going to have a Bachelorette Party, I would have to devise a new plan… Thank you, Natalie!

Natalie approached me early on in our engagement with three words, “Rodeo Bachelorette Party”. Duh, she’s a genius. In our prime, Natalie, Lindsay, and I were rodeo bunnies. The entire summer we looked forward to Labor Day weekend when the Ellensburg Rodeo came to town. We pretended to be cowgirls, 4x4’d in my wheelchair, gorged ourselves on fair food, and line danced the night away. Yeeha!

My next challenge was to convince my City Girlfriends that a Rodeo Bachelorette Party would be fun. Rachel was the first to get on board. Admittedly, she was not enthusiastic about the roadtrip to luxurious Ellensburg, but she certainly had the perfect outfit. What girl doesn’t love the chance to wear boots and mini-skirts? Uh-dorable!

Rachel made an amazing Evite and sent it to my favorite ladies. I was thrilled to see that the City Girls also approved of Natalie’s Rodeo idea. There was so much interest, that I bought 21 tickets to Extreme Bulls. All we had to do was wait anxiously for Labor Day to arrive. But, Natalie, Linds, and I were accustomed to the long summer of anticipation before Labor Day.

Before I knew it, Jecca’s Last Rodeo was here! Brett and I packed the van with a giant box of pink koozies and enough snacks for a dozen Bachelorette Parties.

Giddy-up to Cle Elum! Lindsay and Meghan arrived on Friday night to help set up. As former Ellensburg residents, they appreciate all that the Rodeo has to offer.

On Saturday morning, the rest of the ladies arrived. It was the perfect weather to relax by the pool, sip sangria, and gossip. Maureen decorated with festive boots and pink banners.

She presented me with the most amazing pink cowboy hat... with sequins!

I opened gifts that ranged from hilarious to totally functional. These girls know me so well!

Chef John and Chef Brett cooked us dinner while the ladies primped and fussed over boots, mini-skirts, and cowboy hats. When our costumes were complete, the boys chauffeured us to Ellensburg. Bring on the Extreme Bulls.

The main event of the evening was the bullriding competition. My worries that the City Girls would not enjoy the rodeo were completely unfounded. I recall looking up at the stands to see a row of 10 girls taking pictures of the bullriders with their camera phones. Their oohs and aahhs and whoooaas filled the arena.

One bull must have realized that it’s hard to impress a City Girl as he hurdled over the gate into the fair grounds. Even the most seasoned rodeo fans were shocked as the huge beast bounded out of the ring. Don’t worry, he was quickly ushered back into his pen.

After the bullriding excitement, we finished the night with line dancing and cheap beer. The smiling City Girls indicated to me that Jecca’s Last Rodeo was a huge success.

But, the time came to return home to the Love of My Life. I fell in love with Brett even more when he pulled-up to the bar with a van full of Jack-in-the-Box. My favorite way to end a night out… 99 cent tacos and my Baby.

The next morning, we awoke to Brett and John preparing breakfast tacos with all the fixings.

The girls and I relived the events from the night before. Laughing at our antics and vowing to return to the Rodeo again next year. Yes, it was a huge success.

Perhaps, I am no longer the girl that once dreamt of a Vegas Bachelorette Party. I’ve become the girl who would rather end a night out with Brett by my side. I will always cherish pretending to be cowgirls with my amazing girlfriends at the Ellensburg Rodeo. But, for all the Labor Days to come, Brett will be right beside us at the Rodeo. With my cowboy Brett by my side, perhaps, it’s not Jecca’s Last Rodeo after all!

Sunday Sentiments

Brett is leaving for a business trip tomorrow morning, so this weekend we reconnected before the mighty separation. Yesterday we cleaned the house, battled the laundry, visited Gommy, and took Harper to the dog park. This morning, I woke to the smell of bacon. Lucky me! Brett had prepared a delicious breakfast casserole, bottomless bacon, bagels, and coffee. It’s great to be spoiled.

Brett was not thrilled that the Blogarazzi was taking pictures this early, so here is another to embarrass myself also. So sleepy. Go Hawks!

Throughout this weekend, Brett and I focused our conversations and thoughts on our love for our family and friends. Clearly, life can be so wonderful, but is capable of delivering unimaginable sorrow from time to time. Sending positive thoughts and unconditional love from the Rafuses to the Michauds. We love you.

Two Harts Beat as One

After Colleen’s super-fun Bachelorette party in Vegas, the countdown continued to Colleen and Will’s Big Day on August 20, 2011. Brett’s expectations were set very high, as I entertained him with folklore about Valley kids. These people know how to have a good time. Honestly, I have never met someone from Carnation/ Duvall that I didn’t like. They are reminiscent of Renton peeps in their lust for life, passion for themed parties, and appreciation of cheap beer. Broken ankle? That won’t slow a Valley Girl down… one hand on a crutch, one hand on a beer (we love you, Emily)!

Colleen and Will’s wedding exceeded our expectations. Not only was it fun, but it was also beautiful, classic, and elegant. The ceremony and reception were held at Will’s family farm in Carnation. The weather was perfect for the outdoor ceremony. The Bride and Groom carefully selected the ceremony script to emphasize the true purpose of the event: the love between them. My favorite moment was the tribute to their parents. Brett and I were teary-eyed as we thought of our gratitude for the lessons our own parents have taught us about love and marriage.

As the sunset behind the hills, Brett and I snuggled up and soaked in the rainbow of colors. Pinks and oranges in the sky. Greens and blues in the trees. Magical.

The intimate ceremony was followed by a fabulous reception. We found our seats at tables named for Will’s family’s car collection. Brett and I were awestruck by the classic cars that lined the barn.

Colleen printed individual menus for each guest, so that we knew exactly what delicious dish we were enjoying. The family-style serving allowed us to mingle with our tablemates. More Chi Omega bonding!

The band played original tunes, getting the guests on our feet to dance the night away. Just when I thought the evening couldn’t be any more perfect, the taco truck pulled up. Yes, a TACO truck! Our late snack of tacos was a delicious night cap before heading home.

Thank you Colleen and Will for including us in your perfect evening. Thank you for demonstrating what matters most in marriage: fun, family, and love. Congrats Mr. & Mrs. Hart!

Kate Morton's Castles

Sure, there are some advantages to having a Book Club of one member (me!). There is no one to dispute my book selections (not another book about dogs!), we never differ in opinion (I’m always right!), and I laugh at all my own jokes (hilarious!). However, my last three book selections left me longing for another Book Club member. Who can I rave to about Kate Morton? My patient and loving husband, of course!

Brett kindly listened to my enthusiastic summaries of Ms. Morton’s books, asked poignant questions about the plots, and respectfully ignored my unconscious audible, “oooh!”… “wow!”… “no way!” To let Brett off the hook, now it’s your turn to hear about Kate Morton!

Ms. Morton was born in 1976 in Australia. She currently lives with her husband and two young sons in Brisbane. She received a degree in English Literature and a Masters degree in Victorian Literature from the University of Queensland. She also studied gothic and mystery fiction as a PhD student. Ms. Morton has published three novels, The House at Riverton (2006), The Forgotten Garden (2008), and The Distant Hours (2010). The three novels are non-sequential and unrelated in plot.

Categorically, the novels share various commonalities. The books are organized into chapters with the narrator describing events in third person from the perspective of a main character. The chapters alternate between early 20^th century and early 21^st century narrators describing contemporaneous events. The plots revolve around lavish castles in England and the families that inhabited the castles for 300 years. Family secrets, mystery, plot twists, architecture, and history.

Ms. Morton crafts approximately one male character per novel. However, the great majority of her attention is paid to the development of the female characters. Each character is richly described with complexity and diversity in opinion, social stature, education, and economy. For example:

Grace Bradley (The House at Riverton): Grace is a 98 year old woman, who has been asked to participate in the production of a movie based on real events that occurred at Riverton. Grace narrates her experiences as a maid at Riverton in the 1920’s. She layers the facts that ultimately contributed to the sensational death of a famous poet during a high profile party at Riverton.

Cassandra (The Forgotten Garden): Cassandra’s grandmother raised her. Together they shared a home, an antique business, and personal tragedy. The grandmother did not share that her own origins were a mystery. Cassandra learned that her grandmother was abandoned on the docks in Australia at the age of three. Cassandra’s investigating leads her to a castle in England with a forgotten garden that is shrouded in family mystery and personal tragedy.

Edie Burchill (The Distant Hours): Edie is a 20-something, who acknowledges the tension between her and her mother. When the Post Office delivers a letter long-forgotten letter forty years after it was postmarked, Edie begins investigating her mother’s mysterious past. The investigation unveils a young girl evacuated from London during WWII to a castle in the country. Edie is determined to discover the events of 1941 that drove the castle’s residents into madness and solitude.

My entire Book Club (me) agrees that the greatest tragedy of these novels is that Ms. Morton has only written three. Until she publishes another delicacy, I shall return to my Prince Charming in our little castle Under the Old Walnut Tree.

Extremely Lovely, Extremely Natalie

Amidst a summer of decadent aesthetics, one night will forever stand out in my memory for its rich creativity, thoughtful preparation, and inspiring elegance.

Natalie & Casey Dundas were married on July 23, 2011, in a gorgeous ceremony at Natalie’s dad’s home in Orondo, WA.

Natalie and I have been friends for 14 years. Natalie has always lived life in extremes. She is an extremely kind spirit, an extremely amazing friend, an extremely talented artist, and an extremely loud laugher. In her presence, you gently straddle between laughing at her and with her. Either way, she is extremely hilarious.

My extremely entertaining friend Natalie is also extremely compassionate. She finds beauty and emotion in all areas of life. She unapologetically cries alongside you when life is hard. She squeezes you tight with her shaky hands, letting you know that her friendship is extremely solid. Natalie is sweet, generous, thoughtful, optimistic, energetic, and just a dash of crazy. I love you, Wacky.

Two of my best friends are married to Lindsay’s cousin, Casey. It’s not scandalous… two different Lindsays and two different Caseys. Natalie’s Casey is her soulmate, her perfect match, and her infallible balance. I met Casey years ago when he frequently visited his cousin Lindsay in Renton. As teenagers, we all thought Casey was handsome, funny, charming, and adorable. We also conceded that we were far too immature and far too annoying for darling Casey.

Nearly ten years later, a few of us girls were reunited with Casey for a family reunion. The spark between Natalie and Casey was palpable. Natalie’s doey eyes twinkle as they reconnected. Together, they smiled, giggled, and danced (by themselves!) late into the night. I knew even then that Casey and Natalie finally found their destiny together.

Some years later, their wedding announcements arrived in the mail. Our anticipation for their Big Day grew and grew. The Bride & Groom are so in love! The venue is remarkable! The fruit theme is so clever!

July 23^rd arrived and their wedding was a whimsical success. Casey, Natalie, and her family created an oasis on the river. The breathtaking views melded into Natalie’s artistic embellishments. She thought of every detail, then splashed color and creativity across her canvas.
